THE Douglas Shire’s plea for better services for victims of domestic violence is being heard with the Queensland Government today announcing a new $5 million package over five years.
Mayor Julia Leu has been campaigning hard for the construction of a domestic violence shelter after the region was recognised as one of the worst in the state for family violence.
The Mossman and Port Douglas region will now receive new counselling services and share in up to $980,000 annually with Cairns and Mareeba.
Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui, who visited Port Douglas today, said the new funding was a huge positive.
“The services will also mean that domestic violence victims will not have to travel long distances to access vital support when they need it most,” Ms Lui said.
Minister for Domestic and Family Violence, Di Farmer, said the funding for the new services was part of a statewide commitment towards addressing domestic violence.
“We’re looking for organisations to deliver specialist domestic violence services across Far North Queensland,” she said.
“Support services like these are vital to make sure vulnerable Queenslanders who have experienced domestic and family violence have the help they need to get their lives back on track.”
