More funding to provide ‘21st century communication’ for Far North Queenslanders

A FURTHER $25 million has been committed towards a fourth round of the ‘Mobile Black Spot Program’ to deliver more coverage to regional and remote communities in Far North.
Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch has welcomed the Federal Government’s plan to address more mobile service blackspots across the region.
He said the new round of funding would help ensure ‘Far North Queenslanders had access to 21st century communications’.
It comes after locals and and tourists in Daintree, Cape Tribulation, Mount Carbine, Weipa and Wonga Beach were promised mobile coverage for the first time in these areas by the end of this year.
“This announcement is great news for those living, working and travelling throughout Far North Queensland, and especially Cape York,” Mr Entsch said.
“We successfully secured funding in round three of the Mobile Black Spot Program to ensure notorious dead spots at the Daintree/Cape Tribulation, Weipa, Wonga Beach and Mount Carbine were a thing of the past.”
Mr Entsch said more far north communities should be able to take advantage of the economic benefits 21st century communications can provide.
“There needs to be a focus on FNQ communities such as Rossville, Lions Den, Shiptons Flat and further coverage enhancement along the Peninsula Development Road,” he said.
“I will also be seeking input from Far North Queensland communities to identify any other areas that need coverage, especially those communities that currently don’t have any.
“I encourage local residents, businesses and community organisations to get involved in the consultation process, to further enhance coverage outcomes in Far North Queensland.”
