A 63-year-old Douglas Shire resident is being airlifted to Cairns after a motorcycle accident in Port Douglas this afternoon.

The man was initially taken to Mossman hospital before being flown by rescue helicopter to the Cairns Base with suspected internal injuries.

Witnesses reported seeing a motorcycle lose control near the intersection of Port Douglas Road and Langley Road this afternoon before careering into a tree.

The incident occurred in front of the Port Explorers childcare centre at around 2pm.

It’s believed the motorbike may have clipped a car travelling south on the busy main road.

The Cairns Forensic Crash Unit has arrived at the scene to take over the investigation.

No one else was injured as a result of the incident.
