PORT Douglas overcame a poor start to bank another important win over finals rival South Cairns Cutters on Saturday.

The Crocs received some stern words from coach Brad Cooper at quarter time after going into the break seven-points down.

Whatever he said had the desired effect with the Crocs piling on 7.2 to 3.2 in the second term to open a 21-point lead at the main change.

It was a powerful response from the reigning premier.

Star recruit Brett Meredith had a large say in the turnaround winning a stack of the ball and using it smartly as the Crocs dominated the second half.

The former Sydney Swan is building nicely into the AFL Cairns season after a strong game last week against North Cairns, and he was again a critical factor in the 17.12 (114) to 7.6 (48) triumph over the Cutters.

Assistant coach Wes Glass, Josh Wilson, Skip Gribbon and Adam Gross (five goals) were also dominant, while midfielder Brett McKeown continued his career best form.

The triumph sees Port Douglas move three games clear of the South Cairns in second spot.
