Port Douglas man stands trial on rape charge

RAPE TRIAL
- Man charged with rape
A PORT Douglas man is currently on trial for the alleged sexual assault and rape of a woman after last year’s Port Douglas Carnivale.
The incident, alleged to have occurred while the woman was sleeping, took place on Friday 27 May, 2017.
The Cairns District Court was told the complainant and her female friend had travelled to the resort town to celebrate the annual Port Douglas festival where they met the defendant, of Craiglie, and his male friend.
After accompanying the men home to their three-bedroom apartment, it’s alleged the victim had been asleep, fully clothed, in the defendant’s spare room before the assault.
The court was told the victim woke to the accused allegedly performing a sex act on her. It's also alleged she was raped as she struggled, before pushing him away.
The prosecutor said the accused had consensual sex with the complainant’s friend before the alleged sexual assaults.
The women had agreed to stay at the men’s Craiglie residence after being offered the spare room, the court heard.
The trial continues in Cairns.
