MOWBRAY Valley residents will learn next week what to expect and when work will begin on the redevelopment of the iconic Diggers Bridge.
A Douglas Shire Council spokesperson said today that residents will be notified first before any public announcements are made.
“We will be advising the Mowbray Valley residents via email and letterbox drop what the construction will involve, when it will commence and other information. This will occur next week,” the Council spokesperson said.
The spokesperson would not say when work will begin, but one suspects it will be the week of July 23.
The redevelopment has been a bone of contention among the residents and there have been constant threats of a 1980’s-style Daintree Blockade – where protesters made a nuisance of themselves and tried their best to halt the work being done. There has also been talk of people chaining themselves to trees.
Council has said that the $2.6 million project does not go against their attitude towards the environment despite the removal of a number of trees.
Mayor Julia Leu has said she does not like to see any trees cut down, but the bridge is at a point where it has to be replaced for safety purposes.
