THE Australian Hearing bus is coming to the Douglas Shire ahead of the region’s NAIDOC Week celebrations, which start on Monday July 16.

It comes as Australian Hearing reported a significant improvement in Aboriginal and Torress Strait Islander children getting hearing help at an earlier age, according to new research.

“This is a huge improvement and the result of Australian Hearing working closely with communities and partner agencies over an extensive period,” says Kim Terrell, Acting Managing Director Australian Hearing.

“It’s positive to see more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children benefitting from early hearing help.

“Early access to sound is vital for children.”

A staggering one in six Australians suffer from hearing loss and doesn’t know it.

Anyone in the Douglas Shire can get a free hearing test when the bus sets up in Port Douglas and Mossman this Friday July 13 and Saturday July 14 respectively.
