Tropic Sounds festival to bring the fun back to Mission Beach

THE inaugural Tropic Sounds music festival at Mission Beach is all about injecting some fun back to the area after a number of recent tragedies.
The region was rocked in October when three people were killed in a skydiving accident, while barely a month had passed before another young man died spearfishing off the coast of Hinchinbrook Island.
Festival organiser and musician Tee Ketu, who lost a friend in the skydiving incident, said the idea was born during a tough period for the town.
“It was a very sad time,” Ketu said, who’s band Miss Tee & the Reefs will be one of nine on the bill next weekend.
“I was actually away in the Northern Territory and just getting hold of all my friends in Mission Beach was hard, everyone was sort of in limbo.
“A month went on and another boy died spearfishing, and it was after that the idea came up about trying to lift the spirits around the place.”
Tropic Sounds quickly grew from ‘a little shindig for my mates’ to a full scale festival of nine bands, a DJ and an after party, to be held on Saturday 3 February.
Special VIP tickets have already sold out, although punters can simply rock up on the day for a gold coin donation.
The event will be protected from the elements and held undercover at the Castaways Resort and Spa in Mission Beach.
“Everyone has got behind the festival and it has just got bigger and bigger, and now it’s bigger than just me,” Ketu said.
“We wanted to add a bit of life and enjoyment for everyone and uplift all of my friends.
“It’s been havoc for the town and the place needed a bit of joy, and this will certainly be a lot of fun.”
Tropic Sounds kicks off at 12pm at Castaways with an after party to follow at The Shrub (7pm).
