Port Douglas' famous Four Mile Beach remains open after the recent stinger scare in Palm Cove

Locals and tourists can rest easy knowing that Port Douglas’ Four Mile Beach will not be closed due to Irukandji jellyfish after lifeguards were forced to shut down Palm Cove, Clifton and Kewarra Beaches earlier this week because of the jellyfish.

“Four Mile Beach has been closed in the past because of the Irukandji jellyfish but we are hopeful this will not be necessary this year” said Jay March, North Queensland Lifeguard Supervisor.

“But we do stress the importance of people swimming between the flags and within the stinger nets.

“This is also a busy time of the year and there are many tourists in Port Douglas and if they follow the signs on the beach, they’ll be fine,” he said.

March is encouraging beachgoers to consider wearing wetsuits or other sting-proof clothing to avoid the risk of being stung.

He added that regular checks are conducted for Irukandji at the various beaches.
