TWO men and two boys are assisting police with their inquiries after a dog squad vehicle was rammed by a stolen car in Smithfield this morning.

At 1.10am, a dog squad officer observed a vehicle of interest, a red 2014 Nissan Micra hatchback, in the vicinity of McGregor Road and Sidlaw Street.

The hatchback drove towards the police car in a dangerous manner and collided with the front bumper before the car was driven away.

The vehicle was later observed travelling southbound on the Captain Cook Highway towards Cairns.

A tyre deflation device was successfully deployed on the highway at Aeroglen with the occupants of the vehicle leaving the scene.

Four people were located within a police cordon and were taken into custody. The dog squad vehicle and the offending car both sustained damage.

No one was physically injured. Police believe the vehicle was stolen from a Joan Street, Bungalow address sometime between 12am and 6.30am on January 11.

Investigations are continuing.
