STARGAZERS across the Douglas Shire will have front row seats to a ‘super-blue-blood moon’ tonight.

Those eager to catch a glimpse of the rare lunar eclipse are encouraged to take up vantage points in the ‘darkest areas possible’, according to the crew from Moonglow Jewellery in Port Douglas.

The last super-blue-blood moon eclipse occurred in 1886.

“You want to go to a place where there is the least amount of light pollution, so a drive up the Julatten Range or the Rex Lookout would be ideal,” Moonglow’s Chris McKenzie said.

“If people get down to Four Mile Beach by 9.30pm they will start to see the shadows kiss the moon.”

The super-blue-blood moon describes the occurrence when the ‘three separate lunar conditions’ merge simultaneously.

“Tonight you’ll see the full eclipse of the blue moon, blood moon, and the super moon which will take place over a 70 minute transition,” McKenzie said.

“It’s a very rare thing, Western Australia would be the best place to witness it, but anyone who has a look to the sky tonight I’m sure will find it interesting.”
