LOCAL Stephen Nutt has described the ‘awe inspiring’ moment he shared with a large crocodile at Cow Bay earlier this week.

Drone footage taken by the Port Douglas photographer shows a croc, between 4m and 5m long, clearly aware of his presence at the Daintree beach at high tide, at one point turning towards him while submerged underwater.

Nutt said he hoped the vision would act as a timely reminder to take care around the regions beaches and waterways.

“I’m not trying to sensationalise it, but this is a really good observational experience of the behaviour of these animals,” he said.

“It was an awe inspiring moment, to see a crocodile that big in such clear water was pretty awesome.”

He was with his son, Rueben, when they first noticed the croc ‘about 10 metres’ from shore.

“We decided to put the drone up and it was interesting to note that once he heard the drone, he never floated to the surface again. He submerged about a metre below but was definitely aware of our presence,” Nutt said.

“And one point I moved to the waters edge and put my arms in the air, because I knew where the crocodile was from the (drone) monitor, and he turned and watched me.

“I think it can be quite an educational piece of vision.”

Several recent sightings of a similar sized animal has prompted the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection to investigate the area, with residents warned to be vigilant.
