Work on slipway ‘solution’ to begin

THE new owners of the Port Douglas marina have outlined the preliminary works they hope to achieve this year, with a relocation of the slipway high amongst them.
Syrian billionaire Ghassan Aboud’s $200 million plan to transform the waterfront looks set to include a new home for the slipway, currently located on Wharf Street.
A spokesperson for Crystalbrook Collection said a slipway ‘solution’, the relocation of fishermen pontoons, maintenance dredging and the addition of 24 new marina berths were all planned in 2018.
One of the Douglas Shire Council’s conditions for the landmark development was a fully operational slipway and new berthing facilities for fishermen.
“Once works for the redevelopment commence, we will work to undertake the development in phases to limit disruption and so that the marina and associated services can remain operational,” the spokesperson said.
“This could involve temporary solutions for access and loading.”
It’s believed a new slipway is likely to be built next to Marano’s fuel depot on Dickson’s Inlet, a site long slated to be the base of new marine industry facilities.
It comes as businesses at the marina, such as the popular Hemingway’s Brewery and Barbados Port Douglas, have been assured trading would not be interrupted this year.
