THE worst of the heavy rain is over with conditions expected to ease across the Douglas Shire today.

Flood warnings remain in place for both the Daintree and Mossman rivers, although levels should drop this afternoon.

Port Douglas recorded 208mm on Tuesday with Mossman 156mm in the last 24 hours.

Flash flooding caused havoc at Saltwater Creek just before sunset last night with tourist buses forced to abandon their loads as water poured across the crossing. Passengers were walked across through the water to connecting buses brought up from Cairns.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Annabelle Ford said the system would be moving north today.

“It’s easing, you can still expect a few showers today but the heaviest rain is over,” Ford said
