AUTHORITIES are fed up with people driving through floodwaters as the region prepares for more rain.

Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford said he was frustrated over people continuing to ‘make poor judgment calls’ in dangerous floodwaters.

He said drivers were ignoring the warnings and ‘unnecessarily exposing themselves to risk’ in unpredictable flash flooding.

Storms are predicted in Port Douglas for the rest of the week.

“Frankly, I’m getting sick and tired of seeing these reports on a daily basis, about incidents where our emergency crews are having to put their lives are risk rescuing people who have tried to drive through floodwaters,” Crawford said.

“It's disappointing - and astounds me that people continue to make poor judgement calls, and expose themselves to risk.

“It doesn’t matter what kind of car you drive, how experienced you are, or how badly you need to get across that road: if it’s flooded, forget it.

“QFES’ specialist swiftwater rescuers are well trained and prepared to help where required, but these types of rescues are one of the most dangerous activities crews undertake.

“Let me make this very clear: people who willingly drive through floodwater are risking their own lives and the lives of their rescuers.”
