FOUR Mile Beach has been placed on high alert for stingers today as sustained winds created ‘perfect conditions for irukandji’.

Surf Life Saving Queensland’s Jay March said three days of northerly conditions had prompted the raised alert for beaches from Port Douglas to Mission Beach.

“No one has been stung yet, but given the current conditions we are being cautious,” March told Newsport.

“Port Douglas is not generally a high stinger beach but it’s a bit of an unknown at the moment given the weather.

“With the recent rain and the consistent northerly winds it is perfect conditions for irukandji.”

The current alert was likely to remain for the next week. Marsh said it was important for people to swim inside the stinger net and to cover up where possible.

“We just want to get the message out there,” he said.

“It has been a fairly quiet stinger season so far but with these conditions it could change.

“If anyone has any questions or concerns please talk to your local lifeguard.”
