AN unconfirmed sighting of a 4.5m crocodile 'just 200m from a kids playground' in a Port Douglas street is dividing opinion on social media.

A post to a Facebook page in the early hours this morning warned locals to be careful of a large crocodile near a Four Mile park.

It comes a month after a croc was filmed entering the front yard of a Port Gardens home.

Why did the croc cross the road?

"4.5m croc resting in beach end of Langley Road last tonight during storm (sic)," posted Peter Hamilton.

"Take caution she's around just 200m from kids playground.”

While some members of the forum were thankful for the warning, others were critical of perceived crocodile 'hysteria'.

"Wow, one croc and peanuts want to cull them... you're in crocodile country so treat it that way," said David Taylor.

"Has anyone actually seen a picture to prove a croc is walking the street. This was posted at 3am," wrote Kerry Muller.

David White replied: "You don't need a picture these days to stir hysteria."

The croc recorded on a street on January 20 was reported to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection but is yet to be caught. A floating trap remains in place at nearby Ferndale Lake.

"Thanks for the heads up…really appreciate it. Was about to head off that way with some pals for an early morning walk," said Claudia Contessini in relation to last night’s sighting.

"Isn’t the slogan, ‘be croc aware’? Pete was informing the community. Obviously if we haphazardly walk down to the beach at 2am, we need to be aware!" said Annie Dorrity.
