STORMY: Severe thunderstorms expected in the region. Image: BOM.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands Forecast District.

The warning comes as Ergon Energy have confirmed thousands of customers are without power in the region due to power lines down on the tablelands.

A spokesperson from Ergon Energy has warned people to steer clear of fallen power lines.

“We have more than 19,000 customers without power across the region,” the spokesperson said.

“Crews are out assessing damage at the moment, but they could be delayed by more storm activity.

“If people see fallen power lines, they should stay well away, warn others in the area and report any life-threatening hazards to emergency services on Triple Zero (000) or Ergon Energy on 13 16 70.”

The storm is likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours with Julatten squarely in the storm path.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
• Move their cars under cover or away from trees.
• Secure loose outdoor items.
• Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
• Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
• Beware of fallen trees and power lines.

For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
