Douglas Shire residents are encouraged to keep fit over the summer while supporting the local Surf Life Saving Club with the Swim-Run Summer Series.

The Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club (PDSLSC) aim to engage local residents to join in the fitness and fun over three events in December, February, and March.

The first event is on this weekend at The Mirage Country Club where participants will have an option to join in four different length swimming and running events.

Surf Sports Officer for PDSLSC, Irene Cats, said the events are not a competition and people of all fitness levels are welcome to join in.

“It is a fun event, promoting our members and other locals to stay fit over summer and to challenge themselves,” Ms Cats said.

“There are three dates and we invite people to either try to do the same distance faster each time or work their way up in the distance.

“Just come along and have some fun! I know a first race can be a bit daunting but most people there would’ve never done a swim-run so we’re all in the same boat.

“Also it’s called a swim-run, but of course walking is definitely an option.

“We would love to see kids, adults and families on Sunday. Races can be done in teams as well where one person swims and the other runs.”

The idea for the Swum-Run events was born out of a lack of other sporting options in the Douglas Region over summer.

“We thought this would be a great opportunity to motivate people to stay active,” Ms Cats said.

“Of course we are also proud to promote the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club and excite a few families to join us next season.

“We really hope to see lots of kids and adults joining in the fun! If it rains still come along, you get wet in the pool anyway.”

This weekend’s swim run event has several distance options including 100m swim with a 1km run, 200m swim with a 2km run, 300m swim with a 3km run and 400m swim with a 4k run.

Participants need to be at the side pool gate at The Mirage by 6.30am, Sunday 16 December to register for the event.

Cost is $5.00 per person with all money raised helping to support the PDSLSC.
