Mossman will be home to a new activity centre that aims to connect vulnerable people in the community to essential services.

The centre has been made possible by a $153,702 grant from the State Government’s $2.5 million Dignity First Fund.

Douglas Shire Community Services Association Manager, Christine Woods, said the centre will help connect people to services offered through the adjacent Neighbourhood Centre.

“The significance of this funding is immeasurable,” Ms Woods said. 

“This hub will be a crucial first step to ending a person’s homelessness, helping us make early intervention to those at risk.

“It will allow us to better understand the most immediate needs of people and direct them to further financial and social services so they can achieve long-term self-sufficiency.”

Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu said the centre has complete backing from Council.

“Douglas Shire Council recognises the importance of the activity hub and strongly supported its development,” she said.

“The new building provides an additional counselling and breakout area for clients visiting the centre.

“This will be an invaluable space for some our of region’s most vulnerable residents.”

Cr Leu is hopeful the new centre will help relieve the number of homeless and vulnerable people in the Douglas Shire.

“Lack of services is a problem and this centre could help drive down homelessness in Douglas Shire,” she said.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the activity hub was one of three projects funded in Far North Queensland with more than $288,000 provided by the State Government.

“Dignity First provides for people who really need it, when they really need it,” Ms Lui said.

“A little money and a lot of heart can make a real difference, and this investment will enable a hub to be built containing a commercial kitchen, activity room and quiet space, with access to a shower, toilet and laundry area.”
