Diggers Bridge will be temporarily closed for five days from 7am today 10 December until Friday 14 December at 6pm, when it will re-open.

During this period, the road will be closed to all vehicles, including school buses and pedestrians.

Last month, Newsport reported that the $2.6 million replacement project in the Mowbray Valley is currently under budget, on time and is expected to be completed before Christmas.

And in making this announcement, Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu said the bridge will be closed to reshape the approaches on both sides of the river and lay bitumen.

“Once the new crossing is opened, pedestrians and cyclists will have access to the existing Diggers Bridge and interim work will include temporary hand rails and bollards to stop vehicles,” she said.

Meanwhile, opinion is still divided among Newsport readers regarding this replacement project which raised the ire of Mowbray Valley residents, along with many parts of the community.

One reader wrote: “The old bridge was approaching the end of its (load carrying) life, and the new bridge is hardly an eyesore. New plants will grow, and everyone will wonder what the fuss was about.

All I’m hearing are the rants of bored people. This wouldn't even make the local news in 99% of Australian towns.”

Another countered by saying: “Not sure why anyone would be interested in a bridge that nobody wanted in the first place. Spending a fortune for something not necessary.

I’m just so disappointed in the things this Council are doing, but unfortunately there is nothing we citizens can do because they are not listening to us. A shame it is.”
