Awards, accolades and the opportunity to showcase their high quality of work has been a dominant feature of the Douglas Arts Studio Gallery Inc (DAB) in recent weeks.

At last Friday night’s gala dinner for the 2018 Douglas Business & Tourism Awards, DAB received the Diane Cilento Excellence in Art Award, for contribution to the community in the art space during the year.

Six DAB members are exhibiting at the Melting Pot 2018, National Ceramics Exhibition at the Cairns Regional Art Gallery, which runs until 6 January 2019.

The Exhibition is the 14th Biennial Ceramics Exhibition held by the Cairns Potters Club, which opened on 30 November.

There were 11 entries on show from six DAB members – Leanne Emmitt, Sam Matthews, Ellen Terrell, Vickie Park, Jeanette Warwick and Danielle Piat. Matthews and Emmitt both received Highly Commended Awards.

DAB recently received a cheque for $2,500 from the Building Active Connected Communities FNQ Ltd and the Bendigo Bank, which will be used to improve DAB’s work sheds, equipment and outdoor working space.

And DAB’s end-of-year exhibition opened on Friday 30 November and runs until Saturday 15 December. All of the artwork has been created during the year, including paintings, drawings, printmaking, pottery, glass work, felting, mosaics and jewellery.

“The committee and all 143 DAB members, are extremely proud, honoured and grateful to have won the Diane Cilento Excellence in Art Award,” said DAB president Andrea Falstein.

“DAB offers a very friendly, open, diverse and fun art space to the whole community, with a wide variety of art classes or you can just take the opportunity to come in, chat, relax and work on your art project.

“The Diane Cilento Excellence in Art Award is wonderful recognition for the hard work by a small group of volunteers who keep DAB running. We would like to thank Newsport and the Douglas Business and Tourism Awards program, judges and everyone involved with the award,” said Falstein.
