Newsport has received several calls from distressed residents who believe 'up to 17 trees' faced the chop to make way for a new two-lane bridge.

Douglas Shire Council has sealed off the area and security is currently guarding the fence at the southern access point of Trezise Road.

Chipper and bucket trucks are reportedly under trees in preparation for the controversial upgrade that has outraged sections of the community.

A council sign can be seen on the construction perimeter outlining the works involved in the replacement project and the trees targeted for removal.

At least seven raintrees will be cut down, some of which are 25 metres high.

The Raintrees Group have acted with outrage and have accused council of lying to the public.

The group claim council stated at a recent meeting that only two raintrees would need to be removed. 

The $2.6 million project has been marred by controversy with several land owners and residents in the area questioning the economic and social benefits of the works, but much of the angst involves the axing of the ancient trees.

Contractors arrived in the Mowbray Valley shortly before 7am this morning.
