SUSPECTED damage to one of the Telstra cables disrupted fixed landline services for Cape Tribulation customers for the better part of yesterday.

Telstra’s Area General Manager, Rachel Cliffe, said in a statement that “a number of our technicians are expected on-site today to investigate and begin repair work.

“We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience this is causing and assure them we are working as quickly as possible to restore their services,” she said.

Rob Lapaer, who lives in Cape Tribulation and runs Rainforest Hideaway Jungle Accommodation, said he noticed yesterday morning that the entire town of Cape Tribulation had no landline services.

“Telstra blamed it on someone cutting a cable somewhere, and were going to fix it by Monday. However, after Warren Entsch, the Liberal MP for Leichhardt, called Telstra, they said they would repair the service as soon as they could,” Lapaer said.

“On previous occasions when the phones have been down, there was reason to believe Telstra had forgotten to put diesel in their generator.”

Telstra is hopeful that everything will be up and running today depending on the damage that’s occurred and how it happened.
