Machete wielding man allegedly attacks sleeping couple

A man has been charged after striking two people as they slept in Cairns North, it is being alleged. IMAGE: Supplied.

A 26-year-old man has been charged following an incident at a Cairns North residence yesterday morning.

It will be alleged a 21-year-old man was asleep at the Digger Street residence at around 8.30am yesterday when he was awoken due to being struck several times by another man wielding with a machete. He sustained cuts to his ankles and forearm as a result of the incident.

A 23-year-old woman who was asleep in the same bed, was also struck and sustained a minor injury.

The man, who was known to the victims, then fled the address on foot.

Police attended, and the male victim was treated at the scene by paramedics before being transported to Cairns Hospital for further treatment. 

A 26-year-old Cairns North man was located nearby and taken into custody. He was transported to the Cairns Hospital for treatment of a pre-existing eye injury.

He was charged with one count each of committing an act intended to do grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning bodily harm.

The man is expected to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court later this morning.
