Bob rides into Port to celebrate 10 years of Salsa Sorensen
PORT DOUGLAS
“If you can dream it, you can do it.” - Walt Disney
THIS famous quote has rung true for much of Bob Montgomery’s life and helped him realise success in both business and sport.
And it certainly helped the 74 year old complete a gruelling 3000km ride from Darwin to Port Douglas yesterday after arriving safely at Salsa Bar and Grill.
Bob’s trip coincides with the 10th anniversary of the annual Salsa Sorensen Charity Golf Day this weekend in honour of the late Brian Sorensen.
Covering more than 150km a day since July 22, Bob said ‘it was an emotional time’ as he rode into Port Douglas remembering his great mate Brian, who passed away 11 years ago.
“We were best mates and it was really important for me to be here, particularly being the 10th year,” he said.
“It was a very emotional time for me riding into Port Douglas yesterday. He was a great man.”
It’s not the first time Bob has completed an arduous trip to the tourist village.
In December 2013 he raised more than $30,000 for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) on a solo charity bike ride from Katoomba to Port, covering 3168km and arriving in time to celebrate his 70th birthday.
He and hoped his latest trip would continue to raise awareness of ‘a bloody dreadful’ disease.
“There is no end in sight for people with MND, it’s just death,” he said.
“The pain you go through on some of the hills, I always think about the people with MND and the pain that they are going through, and their pain never goes away.
“Thinking about that helps get the pain out of your brain.”
The Salsa Sorensen Association, founded by Brian’s wife Jenni, Bob and his wife Jenny, has become a Port Douglas institution having raised over $120,000 for local sporting clubs, groups and charities across the Douglas Shire.
To celebrate it’s 10th year, a canape party will be held at Salsa Bar and Grill this Saturday 18 August with the charity golf day to follow on Sunday.
Tickets are on sale online only for the canape party and all community members are welcome. Nominations for a team for Sunday 19th are still available but are limited, check out the website for more information.
