Tour de Cure on 'signature' trip to Port Douglas

CANCER AWARENESS

Port Douglas will feature twice in the Tour de Cure Signature Tour 2018 which starts today from Mackay to Cairns.

The 227-strong Signature Tour Team will cover 1,110km through regional communities across far-north Queensland over nine days from today until Saturday, 5 May 2018.

In today’s stage, the team will ride 150km from Mackay to Midge Point.

Port Douglas will be the end point on Friday May 4 when the cyclists ride from Cape Tribulation, a distance of 145km; and then on Saturday, they head to Cairns, covering 114km.

The Tour de Cure Signature Tour is Australia's most well-known cycling event away and aims to raise more than $2.5 million for life-saving cancer research, support and prevention projects.

A total of $90,000 will be presented to local cancer projects. On each overnight stop, Tour de Cure will donate $10,000 to local cancer projects to support people affected by cancer in regional communities in Queensland.

Tour de Cure is passionate about helping people, who are touched by cancer, particularly individuals and families in regional communities where care and support for cancer patients is limited. For example, for every 100 kilometres a patient lives from radiotherapy, they have a 6% greater risk of dying than city patients.

Raising awareness that 1 in 3 cancers are preventable is a key focus for Tour de Cure.

The team will visit local primary schools along the way and Tour de Cure’s Be Fit, Be Healthy, Be Happy program, will educate more than 5,000 children that by making simple, healthy lifestyle choices, they can reduce their cancer risk.
