THE Port Douglas Reef Raiders rugby union team have recorded their first win of the season when they came from behind in the dying seconds to defeat Cairns Brothers 34-32 in a 10-a-side match on Saturday at the sports complex.

Trailing 32-29 with time running out, the Raiders forced their way over at a lineout at the corner to edge home by the two points.

Although a win is a win, the Raiders have two reasons to thank the Brothers – the Cairns-based team first conceded home ground advantage to play in Port Douglas; and when the Raiders had a number of late withdrawals, they agreed to a 10-a-side game.

“Besides the inspirational result and our first win in a long time, we owe Brothers a big thank you for their sportsmanship,” said Raiders president Don Murday.

“Unfortunately there were player withdrawals at the last minute and if and when this occurs, we don’t have players to fall back on.

“This means our on-going recruitment drive is as important as ever and I am again encouraging anyone interested in playing for the Raiders to attend our practice sessions on Tuesday and Thursday,” said Murday.

Murday said the win could not have come at a better time. “We had an excellent crowd who were treated to a spirited game and the result has provided the club with much-needed confidence. I am also expecting a larger crowd this Saturday,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Raiders will have the services of flanker Jack Murday for this weekend’s clash against Wanderers.
