Emerging writers urged to ‘have a go’ in local competition
DOUGLAS ARTS
IF you have the urge to put pen to paper, but unsure where to start, you now have an opportunity to display your writing skills by competing in Douglas Arts Studio Gallery’s (DAB) writing competition.
It is being driven by the celebrated Alan Horsfield, who has published more than 100 books, many of them educational texts in literacy and numeracy; and his work has been published worldwide.
“I am encouraging people to have a go. If you have an idea that you believe will make a good read and is adaptable to 1,500 words, we’d love to see it,” said Horsfield.
A new or emerging writer is a non-specific term. For this competition, it is a person who is a non-professional writer in any related field, and has not been published professionally or paid a substantial fee for writing.
If there is doubt regarding eligibility it will be at the judges’ discretion. The prizes are: 1st - $100, 2nd - $60 and 3rd - $40. Letters of commendation will be given for shortlisted entries. (All prize money is guaranteed by EJH Talent Promotion and Douglas Arts Studio Gallery Inc.)
DAB also has a Poetry & Creative Writing peer group that meets on the last Wednesday of each month from 6.00pm-7.00pm, at DAB's gallery. If you have any queries regarding the peer group, contact Connie Rossi: 0423 962 996.
Horsfield is a former teacher and past president of the New South Wales Children’s Book Council and is a former judge for the New South Wales Premiers Book Awards.
He loves writing books for children with interesting and quirky story lines that encourage children to read and look at things differently.
All queries for the writing competition should be directed to: Alan Horsfield ph: 4099 3076 or via email to: anehorsfield@westnet.com.au.
Entries close on Sunday 3 June 2018. Entries can be submitted as follows: email: info@dabmossman.com or delivered to the DAB gallery at 11 Mill Street, Mossman.
