State Government to help solve unwanted pet crisis

THE search for an appropriate site for Paws and Claws may not be any closer, but there is one positive in that for the first time since the Craiglie site was demolished, the State Government has come to the table.
"Although nothing has been confirmed, we are grateful for Dr Stephen Miles (Minister for the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection) providing the assurance that the government will help solve what has now been a long and arduous process,” said Paws and Claws president Michael Kerr today.
"The major roadblock has been the search for appropriate land. And it cannot be on the highway; it must be in the back streets; it must be far from houses and must be part of the planning scheme.
"We need 4,000sq metres and we want it to be an animal refuge for Far North Queensland," said Kerr.
The proposed land at Yule Point has been rejected outright. Kerr could not say what kind of assistance the government would provide, but you can hope it will fund the price of the land.
"But I want to reiterate that nothing has been agreed upon with Dr Miles and it's therefore not possible to say we have made significant progress.”
The demolished Craiglie refuge centre has been vacant for months and the proposed service station has been put on hold.
