Southern buyers getting bang for buck in Port Douglas

PORT Douglas not only offers breathtaking views, the serene beauty of Four Mile Beach and the only place in the world that can boast two World Heritage sites in the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest; it also – despite its village size – offers million dollar trophy homes which have won acclaim with their unique and avant garde designs.
And in a second interview with Callum Jones, Managing Partner and Licensee, The Pink Company Real Estate, Port Douglas, he says Port Douglas, for its village size and small population, has a large percentage of million dollar home sales.
“With the Port Douglas peninsula just seven kilometres in length from the highway entrance to the look-out and not that wide, prices incredibly range all the way from $60,000 for a unit to upwards of $10 million.
“It really is a diverse real-estate market where you could compare each street to a different suburb down south and sometimes even one side of the street.
“There is simply no land available; and a limited amount of homes in the area, which helps create demand here for better properties,” says Jones.
Jones says all prices are relative, though, and those coming from stronger real-estate markets, such as Sydney and Melbourne, are in turn getting so much more for their money here locally.
“For the price of a well located apartment down south they can secure a hillside mansion in the port.
“These buyers are also importantly purchasing a completely different environment and way of life to what they are used to.
“Port Douglas has always been an attractive tropical escape – with direct flights to Cairns now from most cities it is easy to get here.
“It’s not over crowded, there are great restaurants and buyers enjoy being around like minded people when they get here. The future for all properties here has a big upside,” says Jones.
Murphy Street with its Charles Wright-designed The Edge and The Glass House are just two properties that have recently made the headlines with prices ranging from four to six million. Murphy Street is also in walking distance to shops and restaurants on Macrossan Street.
