THE search for a fugitive who forced the lockdown of a Wonga Beach school last month has intensified.

Detectives have released an image and details of Mossman man Rangi Fyfe, 20, who is wanted in relation to a string of car thefts and property related offences in the Far North over the last six weeks.

Fyfe was last seen on Tuesday night after evading police near Kuranda. The stolen Toyota Landcruiser he was driving was punctured by police road spikes on the Kennedy Highway before he escaped on foot into nearby bushland.

It’s believed he was driving the same four-wheel-drive when he slammed into a police car on the Captain Cook Highway near Ellis Beach last week. A road intercept was set up near the Buchan Point car park on August 28, only for the man to drive around it and ram the parked car.

He also fled on foot in Wonga Beach on August 17 after crashing a stolen vehicle into a home on the esplanade.

An intense manhunt followed involving a special response team and sniffer dogs amid reports he was carrying a gun. It forced the lockdown of the Wonga Beach State School and homes within the quiet coastal community.

He is also wanted for questioning in relation to a stolen caravan from a Mowbray property in the days after the incident.

Police are advising the public against approaching the man, and anyone sighting him is urged to call Triple Zero (000) immediately.
