Four Mile Beach to signal ‘coral not coal’

In collaboration with Sea Shepherd, GBR Legacy, CAFNEC, Boomerang Bags and the Australian Marine Conservation Society, the Beach Day will raise awareness of the threats to the Great Barrier Reef of the Adani Carmichael mine.
The human sign on the beach will have the message – “Coral not Coal”.
There will be a number of speakers including Mike Berwick, who will highlight the immediate threats and the impacts on the Great Barrier Reef; and the event will be opened by Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu.
The Douglas Shire Council recently voiced their opposition to the Adani Carmichael mine pointing out that 80 per cent of the shire's industry is from tourism.
Ms Anita Everett, spokesperson for the Stop Adani Douglas Shire, said Adani is attempting to build one of the world’s largest coal mines in the Galilee Basin in Central Queensland financed with a $1 billion loan of tax payer’s money.
“This threatens our Great Barrier Reef directly as it will contribute largely to climate change, port expansions and a massive increase in shipping through the Great Barrier Reef,” she said.
There will be added attractions including a sand sculpture competition, and sky diving onto Four Mile Beach.
The sand sculpture competition offers fantastic prizes, which have been kindly donated by local businesses Wavelength Reef Cruises, The Beach Shack Port Douglas, Whimsy Beads Jewellery, and local author Bill Wilkie’s book, 'The Daintree Blockade'.
The Douglas Shire Council and GBR Helicopters are also supporting the event.
