Dragons continue year of local sporting dominance

IT has become the Port Douglas way of life for its sporting teams to reach finals.
And on the soccer front, the Douglas Dragons play the Mareeba Bulls in the First Division Grand Final at Endeavour Park in Cairns on Friday night (8.30pm kick-off).
This is outstanding exposure for Port Douglas, which also has the AFL Crocs shooting for back-to-back premierships at Cazalys Stadium on Saturday.
It’s the fifth grand final for the Dragons, who started playing their home matches under lights at the Port Douglas Sporting Complex this year. The games have been well attended with heavy support from the locals.
They'll be hoping Friday’s final against the Mareeba Bulls will be third time lucky.
“In the first match we drew 3-3 after conceding two late goals in the dying stages of the game, and then we again drew (2-2) in the follow-up encounter,” said club manager Matty McMaster.
“We know we are in for tough clash. But there is an air of confidence; we are excited at once again making the final and believe that the team we put on the park can do the job.”
But the Dragons did make it a trifle hard on themselves against Marlon Coast to reach the final. With the scores locked at 1-1 after extra-time, the Dragons prevailed in the shoot-out 4-2.
The Dragons are no strangers to finals football. They have won three of their previous five finals which is a credible record.
Their under 13 team is also playing off in the final on Saturday at Endeavour Park against the Saints Soccer Club (11.30am kick-off).
Fans wishing to attend the final can capitalise on the supporters bus which leaves Mossman at 6.45pm, and Paddy's Irish Bar & Grill in Port Douglas at 7pm. The estimated return to Port Douglas is at 12am. The cost is $20 per person, and includes entry, and the chance to dance as a Chinese Dragon!
