ANY aspiring realtor may want to follow the advice of Port Douglas real estate agent Steve Doble before embarking on this path.

Doble, who handles property sales and marketing in LJ Hooker’s Port Douglas office, said he would offer five pieces of advice to anyone wanting to enter the industry:

1. Train and keep training;

2. Never lie or twist truth – even if it’s bad news you have to deliver. Muster up the strength and honesty to deliver it in an understanding and sympathetic manner, then suggest a solution;

3. Under promise and over deliver;

4. Accept that the best agents help everyone they possibly can/everyone who seeks their assistance but only sometimes will you/they actually get paid for it; and

5. If you can’t sell your own services and the industry’s marketing to your client, then you probably can’t sell their property for them.

A proud member of the Captains Club – featuring among the top 15% of LJH Sales People Australia-wide – Doble joined the industry eight years ago, but grew up in retail sales. He then moved to FMCG wholesale (fast moving consumer goods – electrical): Philips then Canon Photographics, and has a thorough understanding of relationship-based sales, which is a key element in real estate.

Doble does not believe it is tougher in the real estate market today compared to when he started.

“No, when I joined, the local market was in crisis with units dropping 30%+ in value and housing 20%+. There was more available and fewer buyers.

“Although the gap ratio between too much stock and not enough buyers still exists, there is a lesser degree of separation. I now know more than when I started and my life aim is always to grow as a person, so that helps,” he said.
