THE bill to legalise same sex marriage in Australia has passed the Senate 43 votes to 12.
There were scenes of applause as the landmark bill was confirmed this afternoon.
"This day has been a long time coming," MP Penny Wong said on Twitter.
"A day for which many in our community have struggled. A day we have hoped for. Today the Senate voted for #marriageequality."
It will now head to the House of Representatives next week where MPs will pass the bill ‘before Christmas’ as promised by Malcolm Turnbull a fortnight ago.
