LABOR candidate Cynthia Lui is almost certain to become the first Torres Strait Islander elected to office with a convincing victory in the seat of Cook.

Labor is almost assured of the hotly contested Far North seat with Lui holding 39.26 per cent of the vote with 8874, more than 4000 ahead of her nearest rival in One Nation’s Jen Sackley (4270 votes).

With 72.9 per cent of the total votes counted and only two-party-preferred votes for mobile polling, Bamage, absentees and postal votes to come, the single mum-of-three will win the seat of Cook vacated by Billy Gordon.

Lui has been a popular candidate in the Douglas Shire winning 33.7 per cent of votes in Mossman and 28.17 per cent in Port Douglas so far.
