Wonders of the reef and rainforest on display

ART

FOR the past 15 years, the Douglas Arts Studio Gallery (DAB) on 11 Mill Street, Mossman, has produced some of the finest paintings, drawings, ceramics, glass fusing, pottery and photography.

And as the studio has grown to more than 100 members since its humble beginnings, the shire has marvelled at the outstanding work it has generated during this time.

This was very much on show when their “Wonders of the Reef and Rainforest” art show was opened on Friday night and attended by more than 75 artists, tutors and art lovers, including Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu and Councillor Abigail Noli.

The show was launched as part of Carnivale and the art will be on display at the studio until June 3 on Mondays to Saturdays from 10am to 2pm.

In officially opening the art show, tutor and artist Gail Shaw said the hard work and enthusiasm was clear for all to see adding that DAB is one of the jewels in the crown of the Douglas Shire.

Founding member and artist/tutor Ellen Terrell said paying for the insurance was one of the major challenges when the studio opened in September 15 years ago.

“We managed to get $100 from each of the joining members and in return we offered a free workshop. We have sure come a long way since then,” she said.
