PORT Douglas residents are being urged to be vigilant and security conscious otherwise this region will become a ‘soft target’ for break-and-enter perpetrators.

This comes in the light of a spate of recent house break-ins in the suburb of Reef Park and according to Sgt Damian Meadows, Officer-in-Charge, Port Douglas, one person has been apprehended and further arrests are possible.

“If we do not take steps to be more security conscious, it will continue to promote crime and insurance companies will not pay out when they learn doors were left unlocked, or car keys were lying around,” said Sgt Meadows.

“We have a situation where offenders are heading to Port Douglas from south of us (Cairns) in stolen cars, committing these crimes and then heading back to Cairns. We need to nip this in the bud and discourage this activity.

“I am calling on our residents to be mindful of this and to take the necessary precautions to prevent its from happening and the only way is to be security conscious. I cannot stress this enough,” he said.
