Crocs widen gap on top of the ladder
AFL CAIRNS
PORT Douglas has further widened the gap at the top of the AFL Cairns competition by brushing aside the second placed South Cairns by 45-points on Saturday.
The Crocs jumped out of the blocks in the grand final replay to lead by 25-points at the first change thanks to a four goal to zip quarter. And it was the same faces getting it done again.
Cole Laurie continued his impressive start for his new club with a best-on-ground display at Fretwell Park. He has been a revelation since crossing from Victorian club Diggers Rest in the pre-season, and he had a familiar support cast in Wes Glass, Pete Bury and Todd Shapter in the 13.13 (91) to 6.9 (45) triumph.
When Port Douglas kicked the first two goals of the second term through Jesse Mawson and Kurt Bradshaw, the Cutters were left stunned on their home deck.
They didn’t open their goal scoring account until the nine minute mark of the quarter, through Tom Borillo, but went on to cut the margin to 22-points after consecutive goals to James Dixon and Sam Fary.
Crocs skipper Kye Chapple stopped the momentum shift with a goal just before half time to ensure his side held a handy 29-point lead, and the match turned into an arm wrestle from then on.
Port held sway for the majority of the second half, booting the last three goals of the game to ensure another comfortable win.
They’ve moved eight-points clear on top of the AFL Cairns ladder with an incredible percentage of 340.79 ahead of a massive home clash with Cairns Saints this weekend. It is the club's annual Pink in the Tropics fundraiser match.
