Seachange: Libby and Simon Williams moved from WA to start the new store

It’s a far cry from dairy farming, banking or running a supermarket, but Libby and Simon Williams, who tomorrow officially open SportsPower Port Douglas on 6 Macrossan Street, are confident they will become the best sports in town.

In buying into this member-based franchise, their Port Douglas property is the 135th SportsPower store in Australia and the 13th in Queensland.

“This is a big change for us. For the past 20 years, we managed a supermarket in Western Australia; I’ve worked in banking and Simon has been a dairy farmer near Margaret River,” said Libby.

“We’re excited that we found a niche in the market and in compiling our product list, we were careful not to step on any toes. Our store will provide sporting gear and equipment which was not previously available in the town,” she said.

SportsPower has a history that dates back to 1978 when eight independent sporting goods retailers formed a co-operative called ‘Sports Star.’ So successful was this new strategy, that rapid growth in membership followed, and ‘City and Country Sports’ became SportsPower in 1985. It is now the leading major independent sports brand in the Australian sports and fitness market.

Like most SportsPower stores, there is equipment and gear for a range of sports, such as tennis, football, swimming, skateboarding, gym equipment and a range of Nike, Asics and New Balance running and walking shoes and football boots.

To mark their official opening tomorrow, there will be a sausage sizzle, numerous giveaways and if you purchase a pair of footy boots, you will receive a free gym bag, among other offers.
