Crocs forfeit ‘unfortunate and completely out of our control’: Bradsworth
AFL CAIRNS
PORT Douglas has been issued with a ‘please explain’ letter in the lead up to this weekend’s AFL Cairns season opener after forfeiting the pre-season cup grand final.
The reigning premier had just 13 fit players available heading into the decider against Cairns Saints on Saturday, forcing the club to withdraw.
Crocs president Chris Bradsworth said the situation was ‘unfortunate and completely out of our control’ and the club was cooperating with league officials.
“There was absolutely nothing untoward, we would have loved to play but the simple fact is we couldn’t field a team,” Bradsworth said.
“We had a duty of care to our players. ”
Port Douglas travelled to Cairns with a squad of 24 but were struck down by injuries and work commitments, particularly in their second match against Centrals Trinity Beach.
They defeated Cairns City Lions in their opening game.Bradsworth said heat was also a factor.
“We have documented everything and will get that to the league as requested,” he said.
“It was unfortunate but hopefully we can put it behind us quickly and move onto the real stuff this weekend.
“The last things we want at this time of year is injuries and unavailability but we’ll do our best to prepare for round one.”
The Crocs begin their premiership defence against Cairns Saints on Saturday at Cazalys Stadium.
