Port Douglas man Daniel Rooney charged with attempted murder

UPDATE 4PM: Daniel Rooney, the man accused of kidnapping and trying to murder Port Douglas woman Jessica Hamill, has failed to appear at Cairns Magistrates Court this afternoon.

The Port Douglas man, 24, is still in Cairns Hospital, with the court told today he allegedly has memory issues.

He is currently undergoing a mental health examination and is expected to appear in court tomorrow morning.

He is facing 11 serious charges including attempted murder.

EARLIER: Port Douglas man Daniel Rooney has been charged with attempted murder following the dramatic alleged kidnapping of Jessica Hamill yesterday.

The 24-year-old chef was officially charged with a string of offences relating to the alleged deprivation of liberty and assault.

He is due to appear in the Cairns Court today charged with 11 offences, including enter dwelling with intent, assault occasioning bodily harm, strangulation, deprivation of liberty, fail to stop motor vehicle, contravention of a domestic violence order and breach bail condition.
