THE police prosecutor has asked the Cairns Magistrates Court today for an extended period to prepare the case against Port Douglas man Daniel Rooney, who is charged with attempted murder.

Rooney, 24, appeared in court for the first time this afternoon since he allegedly kidnapped Jessica Hamill on Wednesday from her Port Douglas home.

He is charged with attempted murder, strangulation, enter dwelling with intent, assault occasioning bodily harm, deprivation of liberty, fail to stop motor vehicle and a breach of bail condition.

The case has been adjourned to September 6. Rooney has been remanded in police custody.

The accused was first due to appear in court yesterday but had it delayed while he underwent a psychiatric assessment in Cairns hospital.

The court also revoked two sets of bail he was already on at the time the recent alleged incident took place.
