CONSTRUCTION of the anticipated Flagstaff Hill Walking Trail will begin tomorrow with the iconic track set to link Four Mile Beach and Rex Smeal Park.

Internationally-acclaimed track builders World Trail tomorrow will begin Stage 1 of the gravel-based track from the existing stairs to the Flagstaff Hill lookout.

The first stage of work will take up to four weeks and will include the use of helicopters to sling in building materials.

Douglas Shire council is finalising the tender for the remainder of the 1km track which hugs Flagstaff Hill and is expected to be completed by late November.

Mayor Julia Leu said the $700,000 project was destined to become a must-do attraction for visitors to Far North Queensland.0

“The Flagstaff Hill Walking Trail will boast magnificent views overlooking the Coral Sea and Low Isles all the way to Snapper Island and the majestic Daintree Rainforest,” Leu said.

“The trail is sure to become one of the Douglas Shire’s most popular attractions for locals and visitors.

“Importantly it links Four Mile Beach with the Waterfront and marina and is another great reason to visit and live in the Douglas Shire.

“We also hope to return the historic flagstaff to the lookout that bears its name where it originally stood along with other improvements to the lookout.”

The State Government has contributed $550,000 to the Flagstaff Hill Walking Trail under its Works 4 Queensland program.
