THE pump track, located at the Port Douglas Sports Complex, is an asphalt loop track full of mounds and turns designed for the bike to maintain speed without pedalling.

The track joins onto the already existing Douglas Integrated Riders and Trail-builders Club’s (DIRT) family skills skate park and is a great sport for riders of all ages.

Mayor Julia Leu said the pump track is a new community asset that both locals and visitors can enjoy which will encourage kids to get healthy and active.

“Council supports and encourages a healthy and active region through the provision of sporting, cultural and recreational opportunities however there is a gap for children, especially in Port Douglas, not involved in organised sport,” Leu said.

“Bike riding is an extremely popular recreational activity for young people and the Douglas Shire has some amazing mountain bike tracks but most of these are very challenging and not suitable for young riders or beginners whereas the pump track caters for all skill levels and it’s free to use.

The $131,000 project was assisted by a $100,000 grant under the State Government’s Get Playing Places and Spaces funding program, and since its opening in June has become very popular.

Council hopes that the addition of the track as an active community precinct will help to create a space where families, children and young people can gather for a variety of sports.

The official opening for the pump track will be held in September to coincide with the mountain bike world championships in Smithfield.
