PORT Douglas residents will benefit from extensive renovations to the Port Douglas Fire and Rescue Station.

The $1 million upgrade was jointly funded by the Significant Regional Infrastructure Projects Program which contributed $800,000 with an additional $200,000 provided by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES).

The Port Douglas Fire and Rescue Station responded to 328 incidents during 2015-16 and 346 incidents during 2016-17.

The crew, consisting of one station officer and 16 auxiliary firefighters, attend road crash rescues, vegetation fires and structural fires and play an integral role in the regions emergency service efforts.

The Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan was in Port Douglas today to officiate the official handover of the upgraded station and said it’s a significant win for the local community.

“The 140m2 refurbishment includes a personal protective equipment room, breathing apparatus cleaning facility, locker room and additional amenities,” Ryan said.

“The renovation gives the station increased capacity to store its’ fire trucks, that were previously shuffled around the busy front entrance and gives room for future growth of the fleet.

“This renovation reaffirms the Government’s commitment to supporting our fire brigades, making their role in keeping Queenslanders safe that little bit easier.”

QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the up to date facility meant crews were now better equipped to support the people of Port Douglas and the surrounding area.

The local crew serve areas from Port Douglas to Mowbray Valley in the west along the Captain Cook highway, north to Killaloe and east to the Coral Sea.


“Firefighters based at this station have been protecting local residents for more than 40 years and now have the room and resources they need to serve this growing community well into the future,” she said.
