MORE than 160 athletes and hundreds more support crew took part in the Coral Coast Triathlon in Port Douglas on Sunday.

The event included four races of various distances which gave athletes of all abilities something to choose from including a kids Aquathlon.

The Star FM Swim Course took place off Four Mile Beach and with calm conditions prior to the race, things became a bit choppy as the morning went on.

The Bicycle Centre Cairns Bike Course headed out on open roads down the heart of Port Douglas on a fast out and back multi-loop course. The Studio Pilates Run Course saw athletes running laps of Four Mile Beach.

“The race went absolutely brilliantly,” said club president Nick Carling.

“It was smooth, well planned, well prepared and well delivered. I am so proud of the event team, committee and volunteers for what we achieved and it was quite possibly the best race we have ever put on.

“The athletes faced challenging conditions on a challenging course but really delivered on the day with some fast times and great racing.”

In the kids Aquathlon, which consists of a run, swim, run, it was lightening performances by the whole field but it was Alistair Hickey and Ava McIntyre who were crowned the champions.

The Enticer Triathlon Champions were youngsters Joel Davidson and Aoife Puri, who are both under 16 years of age and continue to show why they are emerging stars of the future.

The Sprint Triathlon was fast and furious with Leigh Whitney and Emma Simpson too strong on the day and taking the honours.

The 36th Coral Coast Olympic Triathlon was the main event of the day and with the strong field of starters it was going to be a tough race for those eyeing the prize money ($250 for first, $100 for second place and $50 for third).

Tim Green was in great form on race day, coming out of the water in third place and having a strong bike leg to put a good gap between himself and the rest.

Green managed to hold strong and was consistent from start to finish taking out top place on the podium in a time of 2h.02m.57s for the 1.5km swim, 38k bike, 10k run.

Tyson Sundman finished second place overall with a strong race and a great run off the bike moving from third to second in the final lap of the run in front a Cameron Kieth who was in the lead pack out of the water, second off the bike and finished third overall in a great race.

The women put on a heck of a show in the same race but it was Megan Hendry who led from start to finish in a quality performance.

She finishing in 2h.16m.57s to take the honours. Sarah Thomas was strong all day and finished up in second place just three mins behind top spot to back up her dominance in IRONMAN Cairns. It was an epic sprint finish for third place with just four seconds the difference between third place Fiona Lenz and fourth place Narelle Broadley as the girls pushed the limits in the final few hundred metres.

“We would like to thank all of our race sponsors, club sponsors, Surf Life Saving Club, Queensland Government, volunteers and all supporting services who helped us put on a high quality event,” Carling said.

A Huge thank you to Douglas Shire and the people of Port Douglas for welcoming us and letting us utilise your beautiful location, it is much appreciated and a real thrill for all athletes.”
