NORTH Queensland's largest reef operator is close to finalising plans for its new state-of-the-art dive centre in Port Douglas.
Quicksilver Group Managing Director Tony Baker said construction of the new Learn to Dive facility should commence in May and create more jobs for the town. The company already employs 245 staff in Port Douglas.
“We are confident in the growth of tourism to Port Douglas and this development will enable Quicksilver to continue our investment in our facilities and services moving forward,” he said.
“We are extremely excited…as it will allow us to grow the learn to dive market in Port Douglas and introduce a dive specialty retail outlet.”
Port Douglas boasts some of the world’s best dive sites close to its shores and the new facility is expected to attract enthusiasts from across the globe. A new four-day dive course will also be offered at the centre which could entice ‘a new market’ to the town.
The centre, to be located on the corner of Grant and Warner Street, will include a dive pool with retractable roof - allowing students to operate in all weather conditions - while classrooms and a dive retail outlet will also be built.
“We hope to attract a new market who will be spending up to a week in local accommodations and be participating in other evening activities,” Baker said .
“We believe the Dive school will complement the services Quicksilver currently provides and bring another dimension for travellers who are considering a stay in Port Douglas.”
In the last three years Quicksilver has purchased the Closehaven Marina and Poseidon Dive and Snorkel Adventures in Port Douglas, along with Ocean Spirit Cruises in Cairns. The group also owns Pro Dive Cairns, Great Adventures, Green Island Resort, Silver Series and Wavedancer.
