Who is your money on?

Guests on a Daintree Wonder Tours trip witnessed a rare face-off between the humble bush turkey and a red-bellied black snake yesterday.

The video, captured by tour guide Dean Nulty, shows a male turkey kicking sand towards the agitated snake at Mossman Gorge. Needless to say the slippery reptile was not impressed.

"It was awesome to watch," Nulty told Newsport.

“We came across it in a dry creek bed and the male turkey was just out defending his nest. Our guests on the tour were blown away by the encounter, it’s not something you see everyday.”

The snake rears up and lunges twice at the protective bird, who manages to evade a strike on both occasions.

“While the bird takes a 'passive aggressive' approach (turning around and kicking sand) the snake opts for a more assertive tactic,” the tour group said on its Facebook page.

Nulty said the animals were unharmed and went their separate ways following the chance encounter.
